Peter Hall Fans Autumn Summer & Smoke???
Date: 3 December 2002
Following director
Peter Hall's summer repertory season at Bath's Theatre Royal (See
News, 2 Dec 2002), he'll return to the West End in autumn 2003 to direct a revival of
Tennessee Williams less frequently performed
Summer and Smoke. The play was originally mounted in 1947, but Williams was so unhappy with the premiere production that he penned a major rewrite, titled
Eccentricities of a Nightingale, which was staged in 1964. Set in 1916 Mississippi during a hot Southern summer when the Gulf winds were late in coming,
Summer and Smoke follows the relationship between a somewhat puritanical Southern girl and an unpuritanical young doctor in 1916 Mississippi as they deal with divergent attitudes toward life. Meanwhile, Hall's current centenary production of George Bernard Shaw's
Mrs Warren's Profession, starring
Brenda Blethyn and Hall's Whatsonstage.com Award-nominated daughter Rebecca, continues at the West End's Strand Theatre to 18 January 2003.
