Lorna Want's Not to Be "Nipped"???
Date: 13 November 2002
In his review of
Romeo and Juliet - The Musical, the
Daily Mail critic Michael Coveney was damning in his assessment of newcomer and star-crossed lover
Lorna Want. This, he wrote, was a career that needed "nipping in the bud" now. But it seems the powers-that-be don't agree. After opening night last week, Want apparently received multiple recording contract bids while
Andrew Lloyd Webber is said to be keen on her for the part of Liesl Von Trapp in his revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's
The Sound of Music. Due to open at the West End's Victoria Palace next may, the production could provide a timely opportunity for the teenaged actress to sing "Sixteen Going on Seventeen". Which isn't to say that
Romeo and Juliet is calling it a day yet. Undeterred by some savage reviews, producers are bullish that the musical won't be closing prematurely. It's currently booking to February 2003.
