Evita Edged Out by Feelgood Fodder???Date: 4 November 2002 When speaking to Parkinson, Andrew Lloyd Webber also suggested that plans to revive Evita - the 1978 musical he wrote with lyricist Tim Rice about the rise and fall of Argentine first lady Eva Peron - are being scrapped. Previous rumours had it that Evita, which this past summer was named as the musical Whatsonstage.com theatregoers would most like to see revived (See Big Debate, would return to the West End in 2003. However, Lloyd Webber now believes it wouldn't do very well. Musicals with serious political themes are out of fashion, he says, as today's audiences prefer "feelgood shows" like Mamma Mia! and We Will Rock You. Along those lines, Lloyd Webber is pouring his own Really Useful resources into the planned revivals of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music and a revised version of his and Don Black's Tell Me on a Sunday, starring Denise Van Outen.
