Al Pacino Picks His Parts for London Run???
Date: 31 October 2002

Hollywood's Al Pacino is obviously succumbing to the stage itch. Over in New York, he's currently starring in a revival of Bertolt Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and will follow that up from 11 November 2002 with 26 performances of a rehearsed reading of Oscar Wilde's Salome, staged in a Brooklyn warehouse for the Actors Studio. After that, Pacino plans to take the title role in Oedipus Rex, also for Actors Studio. What's more British producer Robert Fox is reportedly working with Actors Studio director Estelle Parsons to combine the two as a double bill for first Broadway and then the West End. Pacino's presence here would surely excite theatregoers, who, in a recent Whatsonstage.com Big Debate survey, shortlisted him as one of the Hollywood elite they'd most like to see on the West End stage. Fox isn't the only Londoner with a view to luring over the star of The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico and Scent of a Woman amongst other films. There's been talk that Shakespeare's Globe artistic director Mark Rylance may be able to tempt Pacino with the title role in a new production of Richard III, which the actor updated for the 1996 film Searching for Richard.
