Eccleston Buggers London with Leeds' Hamlet???
Date: 29 October 2002
Never mind what the critics say.
Christopher Eccleston has no intention of bringing his
Hamlet to the West End. Eccleston makes his Bard stage debut in the title role at the West Yorkshire Playhouse on 6 November 2002 (previews from 25 October) in the production, which also marks
Ian Brown's first as the theatre's artistic director. But it's not travelling south if its star has his way. "Personally I don't think London is the centre of the universe," Eccleston told
Ananova. "I think the West Yorkshire Playhouse deserves to have the best
Hamlet it can get so that's what I want to give it. Bugger London!" The play also features
Brigit Forsyth and
Maxine Peake, the latter of whom starred with Eccleston two and a half years ago at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in
Miss Julie, his first and only West End appearance to date.
