Just How Old Is Andrew Bevis' Romeo???
Date: 15 October 2002

Promotional material for Romeo and Juliet - The Musical asserts that the titular lovers will "for once" be played by "actors of the age that Shakespeare intended", and much has been made of leading lady Lorna Want's youthfulness (she's a tender 15). But a posting last week to the Whatsonstage.com Discussion Forum caused a bit of a flurry by suggesting that her co-star, Andrew Bevis, is closer to 30 than 20. The anonymous mole tipped the story to be broken in the next day's Evening Standard. Not so. The paper's arts correspondent contacted Whatsonstage.com to say he had no intention of doing so because he'd been unable to confirm the real age of the Australian Bevis. Well, we can now reveal that the actor is indeed...(drum roll please!) 29, if still incredibly "youthful-looking" as director David Freeman has described him. Let's hope any stress over rehearsals and cancelled previews (See Today's News) doesn't age him any more before the press night on 4 November. And well done, Fab (you know who you are!), for breaking the Romeogate age scandal!
