Sam Mendes Sounds Out Shrek for Broadway???
Date: 15 October 2002
Not to be outdone by Disney - which has found such theatrical success with the likes of
Beauty and the Beast and
The Lion King - Steven Spielberg's Hollywood film studio Dreamworks is apparently planning to turn its hit animated film
Shrek into a stage musical. Although no songwriting names have yet been associated with the project, Donmar darling
Sam Mendes has been mentioned as the show's director. Mendes finishes his ten-year leadership of the Donmar Warehouse next month and will be bringing a Bernadette Peters-led revival of
Gypsy to Broadway next spring. The 2001 film
Shrek - about a lovable ogre (voiced by Mike Myers), his donkey sidekick (Eddie Murphy) and feisty princess (Cameron Diaz) - won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and took some $500 million at the box office. A screen sequel is due to be released in 2004, with the stage musical aiming for a Broadway opening in 2005.
