Les Mis Broadway Closure Stokes Long-running Concerns???Date: 3 October 2002This morning it was confirmed that Cameron Mackintosh is pulling the plug on Les Miserables on Broadway, where it holds the record as the second longest-running show in the history of the Great White Way. The production will have its last performance on 15 March 2003, just after its 16th anniversary. The closure will have many turning their eyes to London. Here, Les Mis - at the Palace Theatre - celebrates its 17th birthday next week, 8 October 2002. Ever since the rash of long-runner demises started at the beginning of this year - with Starlight Express (closed 12 January after nearly 18 years), followed by Buddy (closed 3 March after 12.5 years) and Cats (closed on its 21st birthday, 11 May) - speculation about those still standing has run rife. In terms of musicals, that means Les Mis and, just a year behind in longevity, The Phantom of the Opera, both produced by Mackintosh. Play-wise, of course, there's always The Mousetrap, the world record-holder which marks its 50th birthday next month. Well, perhaps that one's beyond speculation. Related Content |
