Van Outen Tells Us All On a Sunday in May???
Date: 25 September 2002
In addition to the opening of his revival of
The Sound of Music, (See Today's
News), composer-turned-producer
Andrew Lloyd Webber spoke on last night's televised edition of
The Frank Skinner Show about his new project with
Denise Van Outen. As previously tipped in
The Goss (See 3 May 2002), Lloyd Webber is resurrecting his song cycle
Tell Me on a Sunday, written in 1979 for
Marti Webb with lyrics by
Don Black, for the TV presenter who took the West End and Broadway by storm in
Chicago. Lloyd Webber confirmed that the new show was full steam ahead and would open in London, at an as-yet undisclosed venue, in May 2003, the same month as his much-anticipated revival of
The Sound of Music. He said that
Tell Me on a Sunday's original 40 minutes was being expanded to 90 minutes in a racier update for Van Outen. It's not the first time Lloyd Webber has revisited the one-act piece. In 1982, he combined it with dancer Wayne Sleep's ballet,
Dash, to form
Song and Dance, which played for two years at the West End's Palace Theatre. That show was subsequently seen on Broadway, starring Bernadette Peters, and revived in 1990 at the West End's Shaftesbury Theatre. The story centres around an English girl who moves to New York and has various relationships with American men.
