ROH Dips Toe into Musicals with Sondheim???Date: 10 September 2002The Royal Opera House could kick off its ventures into the realms of musical theatre with a production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. Rumours that the musical about the ‘demon barber of Fleet Street’ could be staged at the newly refurbished Opera House follow swiftly on the heels of a BBC interview in which the new musical director, Antonio Pappano, was quoted as saying he was a big fan of musical theatre and that he saw his role to expand the remit of the Opera House, which is often accused of being rather stuffy and expensive.
