National Thinks Anything Goes for Xmas???Date: 5 August 2002American industry bible Variety has reported this week that outgoing artistic director Trevor Nunn is hoping to revive another American musical for the Christmas season. Nunn has found award-winning success the past two years with My Fair Lady and last year's South Pacific and, according to Variety, this year he'd like to give Cole Porter's 1934 shipboard-romance musical comedy Anything Goes. Other recent rumours about the same Porter show have Hollywood's Robert Downey Jr and Susan Sarandon (appearing this month in Edinburgh in The Guys) cast in a London production. One and the same? And which rumour to believe? Another one, recently reported in Theatregoer magazine, had South Pacific being reprised on the South Bank. The National has since denied this likelihood and poo-pooed many of the Christmas rumours. Variety also reports that Nunn was previously keen to revive Stephen Sondheim's Follies, an idea scotched by the Royal Festival Hall production that opens tomorrow. Related Content |
