Tom Hanks Hankers After Donmar Debut???Date: 30 July 2002 Following our recent Big Debate survey in which you voted him one of the screen stars you'd most like to see treading the boards in London, Hollywood's Tom Hanks is reportedly considering doing just that. The Oscar-winning actor says he's been in talks with Sam Mendes - who's directed him in the film The Road to Perdition, soon to be released in the UK - about appearing at the Donmar Warehouse. If that were the case, it couldn't be during Mendes' own artistic directorship. His ten-year reign comes to an end this December following a farewell double bill of Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night starring Simon Russell Beale, Emily Watson and Helen McCrory. Mendes does plan to set up an independent theatrical production company, which will run alongside his ongoing film commitments, and no doubt he'll retain considerable influence at the Donmar. Perhaps a Hanks vehicle could provide a good launchpad? Or maybe not. A Donmar spokesperson dismissed the notion as "completely unfounded gossip".
