Zeta Jones & Spacey Make Waves in Eternity Musical???

According to an interview in yesterday's Sunday Express newspaper, award-winning lyricist Sir Tim Rice is backing a stage musical adaptation of screen classic From Here to Eternity. The 1953 Oscar-winning film about US soldiers in Hawaii before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour starred Deborah Kerr, Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed. Not to be outdone, Rice's casting ambitions for the stage version include some of the biggest Hollywood stars of today, including Catherine Zeta Jones and Kevin Spacey, who Rice would like to play officer's wife Karen Holmes and her enlisted lover Sgt Milton, characters immortalised by Kerr and Lancaster with the film's crashing-waves-on-beach love scene. Best known for his 'serious' dramatic roles, Spacey last featured on the London stage in the Almeida's 1998 epic production of The Iceman Cometh, though earlier this year when appearing on TV's Parkinson, he expressed his interest in doing a musical. The American actor is also a long-time supporter of the Old Vic and has vowed to return there soon. Rice is apparently also keen to get Johnny Depp involved in From Here to Eternity, playing the conflicted Montgomery Clift role of Private Prewitt. Also mentioned for a part is Madonna, who has just completed her sell-out West End season in Up for Grabs. The score for musical is being written by Stuart Brayson.
