US Shuns Villainous Steven Berkoff???Date: 28 June 2002 Contoversial actor-writer-director Steven Berkoff has been deported from the US due to a problem with his visa. His one-man show, Shakespeare's Villains, was due to play in Michigan this week but he was sent home on Tuesday 25 June 2002. The US Immigration and Naturalisation Service at Detroit Airport detained Berkoff for two hours on allegations of violating his previous 1997 work visa. His agent (who is also a lawyer) pleaded with the authorities to allow Berkoff to perform but the actor was placed on a flight back to London. Berkoff was unhappy and kept assuring them "I'm not a terrorist, I'm an actor" but his pleas were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, in this country, Berkoff faces a compensation claim by an alleged victim of assault and rape. He has dismissed the claims saying celebrities "attract people like this like flies to s***." Deserved or not, perhaps Berkoff is working towards the title of 'Global Villain'?
