De Bernieres' Stage Debut Inspired by Joan of Arc???Date: 10 June 2002 On the subject of Edward Hall and his imminent Propeller production of Rose Rage, while Shakespeare purists might not be thrilled at his adaptation of the Bard's Henry VI - in which the nine-hour trilogy is condensed into two plays of two hours each - novelist Louis de Bernieres, of Captain Corelli's Mandolin fame, probably isn't so upset. After all, he could well incorporate some of the chunks Hall left out, about Joan of Arc, into his own first stage work. De Bernieres is reportedly working on a play about the French saint who so troubled the English army in the 15th century. He plans to dispel previous myths and "cardboard cutout" portrayals. Apparently, De Bernieres has developed a keen interest in the project, not just as a possible starring vehicle for his actress girlfriend Cathy Gill, but also because he's discovered that he may be distantly related to Saint Joan.
