Sleuth Slinks into Shaftesbury Ave for Summer???Date: 22 May 2002The evidence suggests that Sleuth, the stage thriller by Anthony Shaffer who died last November at the age of 75, will be revived in the West End this summer. Here are the clues: July, Shaftesbury Avenue. Casting and creatives? Well, that's still a mystery. The original 1970 production of Sleuth was a success on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1972, it was made into a major film starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. Still regularly staged, it received its last major UK tour in 1999, with Peter Bowles and Michael Maloney playing the crime writer and his handsome new neighbour who become wrapped up in a real cat and mouse game. Shaffer's other plays include Murderer, Whodunnit and The Savage Pride. He also found success with his film work, most notably The Wicker Man, for which he always hoped to make a sequel.
