Dumas' Three Musketeers Get Musical in London???
Date: 17 May 2002
A new musical version of Alexander Dumas' classic 17th-century novel, The Three Musketeers, may arrive in London by the end of the year. The 1844 swashbuckler has inspired hundreds of screen and stage adaptations over the centuries. This latest incarnation features music by Briton George Stiles (who won a 2001 Best New Musical Olivier for his Anthony Drewe collaboration Honk!), lyrics by Paul Leigh and a book by Cambridge professor Peter Raby, who first adapted the consummate buddy story for a stage play in 1968. In development for more than a decade, The Three Musketeers was originally touted to premiere in London in 1998 but plans unravelled. It finally debuted in March 2001 at the American Musical Theatre in San Jose, California, where it received strong reviews. In London, the production is likely to be directed by Matthew Francis, whose previous West End outings include last year's A Midsummer Night's Dream featuring Dawn French as Bottom.
