Disney Corners Covent Garden with Aida Arrival???Date: 25 April 2002A transfer for Elton John and Tim Rice's lavish Broadway musical Aida has been on the cards for some time and, in January, it was rumoured that it may be muscling in on the New London Theatre post-Cats. Now, however, it looks more likely that it will move, in spring 2003, into the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, currently home to Trevor Nunn's NT revival of My Fair Lady. The rumour is that Disney has designs on dominating that corner of the West End, where its other blockbuster The Lion King has been playing to packed houses a stone's throw away from Drury Lane, at the Lyceum, since October 1999. Based on the classic opera, Aida tells the love story of a Nubian princess forced into slavery in ancient Egypt. The musical opened on Broadway in March 2000 and, amongst other accolades, has won a Tony Award for Bob Crowley's set design and a Grammy for Elton John's score. Related Content |
