Will Broadway Tire of British Imports???

Should we start bracing for a backlash? The tell-tale signs may come soon enough with this year's Tony nominations. No matter, though, the export of UK productions to Broadway seems to be not only continuing but gathering pace. Hot on the heels of Mamma Mia!, The Shape of Things, Noises Off, Private Lives, The Graduate, The Mystery of Charles Dickens and a belated Oklahoma! come yet more UK to US transfers. Negotiations are now underway to take current London hits "junk opera" Shockheaded Peter, Gregory Burke debut Gagarin Way and the Jude Law-headed Doctor Faustus to Broadway along with the recent Whatsonstage.com Award-winning revival of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, starring Eddie Izzard, and, already announced, the Right Size / Morecambe & Wise comedy The Play What I Wrote. Meanwhile, though we could hardly claim it is a British production, the South African hit The Mysteries, currently running to rave reviews at the West End's Queens Theatre after its British premiere last year at Wilton's Music Hall, looks likely to open on Broadway in early 2003 following further dates on a world tour.
