New York Shuns Goodman's Take on Producers???Date: 15 April 2002 Multi award-winning West End star Henry Goodman's big Broadway breakthrough has turned sour, according to reports in today's New York Post. Apparently, Goodman has been fired from his dream part playing Max Bialystock in Mel Brooks' The Producers. Goodman, who was hired to replace Tony Award-winner Nathan Lane in the hit Broadway musical, started performances in New York on 19 March and was due to face the critics on 1 May, but was apparently given his marching orders after yesterday's matinee. The rumour is that Goodman, in an attempt to differentiate his performance from his predecessor, was coming across as too brooding. A cast member told the newspaper that Goodman "just isn't funny...he's a very good actor, but he's very serious. He's not a musical-comedy star." Fans of Goodman's from West End hit musicals such as Guys and Dolls and Chicago and last year's award-winning comedy Feelgood may beg to differ on that assessment of his talents. In The Producers, Goodman is likely to be replaced by his American understudy, Brad Oscar. The good news is that we may get to see Goodman back home soon. Playwright Ronald Harwood is reportedly keen for him to assume the title role in a major revival of The Dresser.
