Friel's Afterplay Hits London After Dublin???
Date: 3 April 2002
The Irish Gate Theatre's current production - the world premiere of Brian Friel's
Afterplay - looks likely for a West End berth. The play, which imagines two Chekhov characters meeting up in a Moscow café years later, has received strong reviews in Dublin, where it continues until 20 April 2002. But, truth be told, it would be strong transfer material for its cast - veterans
John Hurt and
Penelope Wilton - alone. Another upcoming Gate production (and another world premiere from one of Ireland's premiere playwrights) is also creating buzz. Frank McGuinness'
Gates of Gold, recounting the tale of two men and the theatre they founded, stars
Alan Howard and
Richard Johnson. Other recent Gate productions to have successfully crossed over to London include the
Ian Holm-led revival of Pinter's
The Homecoming and Conor McPherson's
Port Authority.
