Pirates Move to West End for Third London Summer???
Date: 13 March 2002
The Open Air Theatre's production of
The Pirates of Penzance is readying for a transfer into the heart of the West End - a move which would also mark its third summer season in London. First seen at the Regent's Park venue in summer 2000,
Ian Talbot's production of the Joe Papp revamp of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic was nominated for three Laurence Olivier Awards, including Outstanding Musical Production. It returned to the Park last summer before embarking on an extensive UK tour that continues until the end of next month. Papp's version of the operetta was first performed in New York in 1980. The West End transfer of the Open Air production, which currently stars
Gary Wilmot and
Su Pollard, is expected within the next few months, though a date and venue has not been confirmed.
