Spacey Taps Back into Action for Old Vic???Date: 11 March 2002Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey has reiterated his intention to return to the London stage and, more specifically, to the Old Vic where he was last seen in 1998 in the Almeida production of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, for which he won a Best Actor Olivier. Speaking on Saturday's TV chat show Parkinson, Spacey said, "Next time I get up on stage, it'll either begin at the Old Vic or end up at the Old Vic." Spacey, a member of the Old Vic board who regularly flies in for updates, has previously been rumoured to be returning to the theatre perhaps as both actor and director. He was joined on Parkinson by Dame Judi Dench, with whom he co-stars in The Shipping News. The pair recently used the UK premiere of the film as a fund-raising event for the Old Vic. Both actors revealed that, after a busy year, they would be taking a break from filming, with Dench using the time to come to terms with the death last year of her husband, actor Michael Williams. Dench has, however, committed to a West End appearance later this year, alongside Maggie Smith in David Hare's new play The Breath of Life. Both Dench and Spacey enthused that theatre, not film, remains their real love. For his part, Spacey also demonstrated a keen interest in musical theatre, which he was involved in as a teenager. He has recently sang at benefit events in London and New York and demonstrated his tap-dancing abilities on Parkinson. Could a musical debut at the Old Vic be on the cards? Related Content |
