Aida Challenges Contact for New London Berth???

Date: 22 January 2002

Another big-budget show has cropped up as a possibility to contend with Susan Stroman's Broadway dance-play Contact as a replacement for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats at the West End's New London Theatre. A transfer for Elton John and Tim Rice's lavish Broadway musical Aida has been on the cards for some time, and the latest prediction is that it will definitely be landing sometime this year, possibly at the New London where Cats closes on its 21st birthday, 11 May 2002. Based on the classic opera, Aida tells the love story of a Nubian princess forced into slavery in ancient Egypt. The Disney production opened on Broadway in March 2000 and, amongst other accolades, has won a Tony Award for Bob Crowley's set design and a Grammy for Elton John's score. Lloyd Webber, whose Really Useful Theatres owns the New London, has said before that he believes the 1,100-seat theatre to be the most flexible in the capital and has stated his intention to make it the West End's leading venue for new and innovative work.
