Friedman Sisters Join Forces for Funny Girl???Date: 17 January 2002 Sonia Friedman is planning to revive the musical Funny Girl, based on the life of US comedienne Fannie Brice, who is expected to be played by Sonia's own sister Maria Friedman. The project is due to be one of the first shows from the newly formed Sonia Friedman Productions, a subsidiary of Ambassador Theatre Group, where Sonia will continue to work, producing and programming for the West End's New Ambassadors Theatre, owned by ATG. In 1968, Funny Girl - by Isobel Lennart and Bob Merrill, with music by Jule Styne - was famously made into a Hollywood movie, directed by William Wyler and starring Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif. The story follows the life of Brice from her childhood in the Jewish slums of New York to her career success with the Ziegfeld Follies. Olivier Award winner Maria was most recently seen in Cameron Mackintosh's The Witches of Eastwick and has also been rumoured to be lined up for an upcoming Andrew Lloyd Webber-led revival of The Sound of Music. Her other recent credits include Chicago and The Lady in the Dark.
