Star Trek Stewart Revives Classic in London???
Date: 10 January 2002
Patrick Stewart may be treading the British boards again by the end of the year. This past autumn, the actor - now best known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the new
Star Trek - returned to his Yorkshire roots to star in the West Yorkshire Playhouse production of JB Priestley's rarely performed
Johnson Over Jordan, which received mixed reviews. He's also providing the pre-recorded voice of the almighty wizard in the WYP's upcoming musical outing for
The Wizard of Oz. In a recent US interview, Stewart said that his future schedule would include a "major" London revival of a "classic play", which would hit town in late 2002 or early 2003. Before that, though, he has film commitments for both
Star Trek and
X Men. Though his roles in those series has secured him international fame, Stewart is a classically trained actor, whose many stage credits include
The Tempest,
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and, in the US, his one-man adaptation of Dickens'
The Christmas Carol. In 1999, he became notorious for his Broadway role in Arthur Miller's
The Ride Down Mt Morgan, during which he used the curtain calls as an opportunity to publicly criticise the producers for their lack of marketing support.
