And the Candidates Are...Or Are They???Date: 7 January 2002It's the hottest and most diverting pastime in London's theatreland. The National Theatre may have opted out of the game since September when it confirmed Nicholas Hytner as Trevor Nunn's successor, but with resignation following resignation leading to imminent artistic director vacancies at the Donmar Warehouse, Almeida and Hampstead Theatres, the guessing (educated or otherwise) about who'll end up where seems irresistible. Lots of names have been bandied around, amongst them.... For the Almeida: former NT artistic director Richard Eyre, Cheek by Jowl's Declan Donnellan, former Royal Court director and Billy Elliot star Stephen Daldry, NT associate directors Mick Gordon and Howard Davies, and even a new "dream team" of actor Anton Sher and director Gregory Doran who, in addition to being frequent professional collaborators, are also partners domestically... For the Donmar: associates Michael Grandage and David Leveaux, Sir Peter's son Edward Hall and Paines Plough's Vicky Featherstone.... And for the Hampstead: Oxford Stage's Dominic Dromgoole and Out of Joint's Max Stafford-Clark. Related Content |
