Dench Recreates Blonde Bombshell on Stage???

Date: 2 January 2002

The stage adaptation of Alan Plater's BAFTA Award-winning TV drama The Last of the Blonde Bombshells is on schedule for a late 2002/early 2003 premiere, and there's a delicious possibility that Judi Dench may reprise her starring film role as Elizabeth, the saxophone-playing widow who reunites her friends from wartime swing band, The Blonde Bombshells. The film also featured Ian Holm, Billie Whitelaw, Olympia Dukakis, Joan Sims, June Whitfield and Cleo Laine. Casting is a long way off but the prospect of clinching Dench is strengthened since both she and Plater, who is adapting his own script, are members of the co-operative production company, which is undertaking the project. Founded by Ray Cooney in 1983, the Theatre of Comedy counts amongst its members dozens of leadings stage, actors and directors. It is also producing Plater's new play, Only a Matter of Time, premiering at Newbury's Watermill Theatre in February 2002. Dench is currently appearing in the West End in Peter Hall's production of The Royal Family.
