Male Leads Alternate in 2002 Godspell???
Date: 9 November 2001
Plans for a West End return for
Godspell appear to be firming up. The new production, which is expected to open in Edinburgh in March ahead of a UK tour and London transfer, is said to star
Neighbours' Daniel MacPherson and pop singer Jonathan Wilkes. But rather than claiming a single male role, the two are tipped to alternate playing Judas and Jesus Christ in the New Testament-inspired rock musical. Written by Stephen Schwartz and Michael Tebelak,
Godspell's score includes "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord", "Day By Day" and "All Good Gifts". The musical opened Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre in May 1971, before clocking up over 2,000 performances on Broadway. A movie version, starring David Haskell and Victor Garber, followed in 1973. The original West End production starred David Essex.
