Doyle's Guess Who Hits London via Dublin???
Date: 24 October 2001
A new Irish comedy by Roddy Doyle could be headed for London after winning rave reviews at this month's Dublin Festival. Guess Who's Coming for Dinner is loosely based on the 1967 Hollywood classic Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, which starred Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and Sidney Poitier. In the stage four-hander, Doyle transplants the action to Dublin where a local family must face up to their prejudices when a Nigerian asylum-seeker visits their home. A native Dubliner himself, Doyle is best known as the Booker Prize-winning novelist of The Van, The Snapper, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha and The Commitments, which was also made into a successful film. The author was closely involved in the casting and rehearsals for the stage play, which is directed by Bairbre Ni Caoimhe.
