Rigg Too Grand for Humble Boy???
Date: 16 October 2001
Charlotte Jones' new play Humble Boy, a hit at the National's Cottesloe Theatre where it premiered last month, is readying for a West End transfer - with one major omission. Star Diana Rigg is unlikely to accompany the show to its new home. The comedy, in which Rigg plays middle Englander mother to Simon Russell Beale's Cambridge astrophysicist, concerns broken vows, failed hopes, the joys of bee-keeping and more than a few echoes of Hamlet. It is expected to open in the West End in early 2002, ahead of a transatlantic transfer. Jones' previous writing credits include In Flame, which won her the Critics' Circle Most Promising Playwright award. Humble Boy also stars Denis Quilley.
