Antony Sher Writes Himself a Winning Role???Date: 19 October 2001 Actor Antony Sher, whose current job in Ronald Harwood's Mahler's Conversion at the Aldwych Theatre will come to a premature close on 3 November, may be working with a new playwright for his next role - himself. The renaissance star is adding the playwriting string to a bow which also includes acting, painting, novel and memoir writing. The source for his first play is Dutch writer Henk van Woerden's biography of madman Demitrios Tsafendas who, in 1966, assassinated South African prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd. Sher, himself South African-born, has adapted the book, A Mouthful of Glass, and has been workshopping the script at the National Theatre Studio. He has described the story as "poignant and disturbing" and aims to play the lead of Tsafendas himself.
