Winslet to Join Kidman on Stage???

Date: 25 September 2001

Sam Mendes, the award-winning director of the Donmar Warehoue theatre, is rumoured to have been in talks with Kate Winslet about a possible stage appearance. Mendes is believed to be interested in linking Winslet up with fellow film-star Nicole Kidman, who now seems certain to return to the London stage next year. While at the Venice Film Festival recently, promoting her latest screen release Moulin Rouge, Kidman confirmed that she would indeed be appearing in Ibsen's Lady from the Sea, directed by Trevor Nunn at the National, as well as a double bill directed by Mendes at the Donmar. Kate Winslet was born in 1975, and seemed destined for the stage given that her grandparents’ 'garden' contained a 60 seat theatre. Her Uncle Robert also appeared in a West End Oliver! production as the dastardly Mr Bumble. After appearing in a Sugar Puffs TV advert, Winslet's early stage career included A Game of Soldier, Adrian Mole and What the Butler Saw. However, her international reputation rests on starring roles in such major movies as Heavenly Creatures, Titanic, Jude, Hideous Kinky and the recent Quills. Mendes' follow-up to his Oscar-winning screen debut American Beauty will be entitled The Road to Perdition, with Paul Newman and Tom Hanks leading the cast.
