Abigail Jaye On...Evita

Date: 7 June 2011

Actress and singer Abigail Jaye has been lucky enough to work with Tommy Steele in Scrooge and Doctor Dolittle. She has also proven how versatile she is by performing in Eurobeat and a year ago, she took on the iconic title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical Evita on tour - which has given her the chance to sing classic songs such as "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." The show arrives in Liverpool later this month. We caught up with Abigail to chat about the musical and the flawed woman she plays.

How challenging is it to play such an iconic role?

I've now been playing the role for just over a year so it has become slightly less challenging but it is still an enormous role to play.

"Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is such a powerful song. Even though you sung it countless times, why do you think it's such an emotional number for you and the audience?

Because it was equally a powerful and iconic moment in Eva Peron's life and since this is reflected with such genius within the lyrics and music of the piece, the audience cannot help being moved night after night.

Eva Peron is a flawed figure. How much research did you do before approaching the role?

I read around 9 books on Eva, used the internet, and spoke to previous Evas to get some tips!

What's your take/opinion of her?

I admire her drive and passion. It must have been so difficult for women of that era to remain strong and climb the ladder of success when men were so dominant. She will always be an icon and an inspiration.

What has been your favourite stage role to date and why?

Definitely Eva Peron. It is such a challenge and an honour to play such a magnificent part. I am very lucky.

How do you prepare for a show like Evita?

A lot of research and rehearsal. We have a fantastic cast and creative team who make the whole process enjoyable.

Are there any parts you would still like to play and why?

I would love to play Edith Piaf when I am older as she is another iconic figure.

Who has been your favourite co-star and why?

I loved working with Tommy Steele, he is such a legend. He is someone I admired from an early age.

What are your plans when the tour is over?

To have a lovely long holiday, see my family, and catch up with friends.
