Top Five: Shows to See With Your Dad for Father's Day

Date: 13 June 2011

Father’s Day arrives Sunday 19 June. Still looking for a gift for Dad? Here's our round-up of the top five shows currently in London perfect for Dads of every kind.

WE WILL ROCK YOU
Dominion Theatre

Playing at the Dominion Theatre since May 2002, We Will Rock You is the head-banging, toe-tapping musical based on the songs of Queen.

Set in a completely globalised future where everyone listens to the same music, wears the same fashions and thinks the same thoughts, rock ‘n’ roll has effectively been banned for centuries. But legend has it that somewhere instruments still exist, waiting for a hero to play them…

Winner of five Whatsonstage.com Awards including Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best Director, the show features 31 of Queen’s greatest hits including “I Want to Break Free”, “Somebody to Love”, “Killer Queen”, “Play the Game”, “Under Pressure”, “Don't Stop Me Now”, “I Want It All”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, “Another One Bites the Dust”, “We Are the Champions” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

Rock out with Dad at a show he’ll never forget!

YES, PRIME MINISTER
Apollo Theatre

Winner of the 2011 Whatsonstage.com Award for Best New Comedy, the side-splitting political romp Yes, Prime Minister originally opened in autumn 2010 with Henry Goodman and David Haig at the Gielgud Theatre.

Following the UK-wide tour, acclaimed English actor Simon Williams and Olivier Award-nominee Richard McCabe will reprise the roles in the West End for a special limited run.

Heading the coalition government, Prime Minister Jim Hacker is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of economic crisis, and the only possibility of hope presents itself in the form of a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of close advisors be able to ride out the storm and emerge unscathed?

Join us on our special Group Outing to Yes, Prime Minister on 18 July 2011 and receive a FREE programme and access to our EXCLUSIVE post-show reception with the cast, all included with your top-price ticket!

ROCK OF AGES
Shaftesbury Theatre

So this show might not actually start perviews at the Shaftesbury Theatre until 31 August ahead of opening on 27 September, but show could be better for dads than a musical which includes rock anthems from the likes of Bon Jovi, Journey, Whitesnake, Poison and Pat Benetar.

Built around classic rock hits from the 1980s, Rock of Ages is a musical set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip. With a book by Chris D'Arienzo, the smash-hit musical premiered in LA in 2006.

Rock of Ages tells the story of Drew, a boy from South Detroit, and Sherrie, a small-town girl, both in LA to chase their dreams of making it big and falling in love.

Shayne Ward, the 2005 winner of ITV talent show X Factor, joins comedian and presenter Justin Lee Collins, who will play ageing hippy Dennis Dupree in this classic rock jukebox musical.

Among the more than 20 hit songs in Rock of Ages are “Sister Christian”, “I Wanna Rock”, “We’re Not Gonna Take It”, “Come on Feel the Noize”, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, “Don’t Stop Believin’”, “Dead or Alive”, “We Built This City”, “I Wanna Know What Love Is” and “The Final Countdown”.

WAR HORSE
New London Theatre

Based on the celebrated novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse is the National Theatre's spectacular and thrilling adaptation by Nick Stafford.

The First World War is the backdrop for this tale of bravery, loyalty and the extraordinary bond between a young recruit and his horse. Young Albert's beloved horse, Joey, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France at the outbreak of World War One. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to the trenches to find him and bring him home.

Featuring astonishing life-sized horse puppets by the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Company, the production is directed by Marianne Elliot and Tom Morris and won five Tony Awards at the New York ceremony last night (12 June 2011).
