How much is that doggy in the Gielgud? –Douglas Carter Beane's Tony award-nominated comedy hilariously satirises the superficial world of show-business and the game-playing of the movie industry. Starring Tamsin Greig, Rupert Friend, Gemma Arterton and Harry Lloyd, The Little Dog Laughed is a cautionary tale about a handsome film actor who dares to come out of the closet and his tough, ballsy agent who wants him to stay in it. When the actor falls for a rent boy, who also happens to have a girlfriend, an awkward love triangle is created.
Flash in the pan…? - After a UK tour last year, the new musical staging of the hit movie Flashdance has once again been rumoured to be heading into the West End. After earlier reports of a possible stay at the Piccadilly theatre, where its former leads Noel Sullivan and Victoria Hamilton Barritt are currently starring in Grease, it now looks possible that it may be the show to oust the hit musical Hairspray from the Shaftesbury theatre later this year. Only time will tell on that front, but here we can have a look at the original touring show featuring some of the hit songs made famous by the movie.
Something Hairy this way comes… - In a bit of a coup for the West End producers, the imminent revival of Hair will see the entire original Tony Award winning cast direct from Broadway transfer to the Gielgud theatre to being performances this spring. Billed as a “celebration of life and freedom”, it’s brought to the UK by Sir Cameron Mackintosh who, in a rather ironic twist, was a runner on the original West End production of the hippy show back in 1968. Featuring a much love soundtrack, Hair will be back in town before we know it, and with nudity, spliffs and sexual liberation, it’s probably not for the easily offended!
Stars lament the end of The South Bank Show – The 13 award winners were recently announced in the 13th and indeed last ever South Bank Show Awards. With the television program ending in December last year, the final awards show was a chance for those prominent in the world of art and culture today to celebrate the huge success the show has enjoyed and comment on its demise from our screens. Receiving the Outstanding Achievement award himself, Melvyn Bragg was sure the arts would go on to even greater heights and he wouldn’t be away from our screens for long. Watch this space…
