Brief Encounter With … Andonis Anthony

If you have seen a play in the Northwest in the last 10 years, the chances are you have seen Andonis Anthony. This versatile actor has starred in British dramas such as Beautiful Thing and A Taste Of Honey, alongside plays such as Rozencrantz and Guilderstern Are Dead and Design For Living. Keeping with the local theme, he has also played David Platt's boss, Paul in Coronation Street. Also a regular at the Oldham Coliseum, he currently stars as the Demon Of Discontent in their Christmas show, Mother Goose, which is garnering great reviews.

How did you start out as an actor?
I was always involved in Drama at school and university. I then decided to train as an actor, once I came out of college I did a lot of Fringe Theatre and was able to get an agent.

When did you realise that this was definitely the job for you?
When I’m involved in something good and worthwhile I love this job. I love the work itself and have always enjoyed it. I’m constantly amazed that I do something which I have great fun doing and it keeps a roof over my family’s head and food on the table.

You have performed in some classic British dramas such as Beautiful Thing and A Taste Of Honey. What attracts you to these dialogue driven pieces?
These pieces are a reflection of the human condition. I love the exploration of us.

As Christmas approaches there are productions aimed at families. What makes Mother Goose stand out?
Quality! Everyone in it is superb and the writing is great. The story really engages the audience while the singing, dancing and action are fantastic. The Oldham Coliseum always concentrate on quality.

Do you have a favourite line, scene?
I love the scenes that I have with Fine Time Fontayne who plays Mother Goose. He is a truly brilliant comedic actor. As the baddie, the front cloth scenes and the interaction with the audience are very exciting.

What’s been the funniest/most memorable incident that has happened in rehearsals?
These rehearsals have been a series of funny moments. The cast are simply beautiful and funny people, a joy to work with.

What’s the best thing about performing to so many children in a production like this?
Their imaginations are so ripe. They are ready and willing to believe and that is wonderful. It also means my own children can come and see me in something.
 
You have performed at the Royal Exchange, The Library, The Octagon and the Coliseum. What do you like about Manchester’s theatre scene?
Manchester has a fantastic repertory theatre scene and some amazing venues. I love the innovative and challenging pieces that they stage.

What has been the most challenging role you have taken on and why?
I’ve been lucky enough to have faced quite a few challenges in my career. Angels in America at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool comes to mind. We did both parts, so this was six hours of very intense material. A fantastic production.

How do you hope to spend Christmas?
With my wife and children, an open fire, a large turkey and a bottle of wine.

What have you got lined up next?
Some television, I’ve not signed on the dotted line yet so fingers crossed…
