Back in the picture - Lee Hall's award-winning play The Pitmen Painters is returning to the National Theatre this month before embarking on a UK tour. The play focuses on a group of Ashington miners who hired a professor to teach an art evening class and subsequently went on to create renowned art collections and befriended some of the most avant-garde artists of their time – whilst continuing to work down the mine, as before. A real ‘story tellers’ piece of theatre, which is well worth a look.

Look after the pennies…. - One of the most infamous scandals in financial history becomes a theatrical epic in Lucy Prebble’s new play, ENRON. A heady mix of classical tragedy and savage comedy, it follows a group of deeply flawed men and women in a story of greed and loss, which reviews the tumultuous 1990s and casts a new light on the financial turmoil in which the world finds itself in 2009. Based on real life and using music, movement and video, ENRON is directed by Rupert Goold whose recent credits include King Lear, No Mans Land, Six Characters in Search of an Author and of course the current long-runner at the London Palladium, Oliver! An astute theatrical response to the way in which we view monetary affairs – break open the piggy bank for a ticket!

Bouncing Back - Bounce are known for creating high energy, imaginative street-dance theatre, enjoying hit runs at both the Peacock Theatre and the Roundhouse. Their latest show at the Peacock Theatre, Insane in the Brain takes the classic story of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and injects a healthy dose of modern-day hip hop energy, with spectacular results. This is an absolute visual treat, which brings the original film rocketing into the present day.

Secrets of the Garden - Following on from their previous sell out Christmas shows, West Yorkshire Playhouse will this year be mounting a brand new musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic children’s novel, The Secret Garden. Here, director Ian Brown talks about his decision to reinvent the much-loved story and how he thinks children today will respond to the timeless tale.
