True Turkeys: What the Oliviers Overlooked
Date: 27 January 2000

Whatsonstage.com Turkeys Given that the Laurence Olivier Awards are designed to reward the best in West End theatre, it's hardly surprising that the following five categories don't figure anywhere on the official list of nominations. However, the fact of the matter is the West End is home to as many duds as diamonds. And so we at Whatsonstage.com feel it's our duty to commemorate the Biggest Turkeys of 1999. And the winners are:

Worst Play
Nominations:
50 Revolutions
Love Letters
The Chiltern Hundreds
Our winner:
Love Letters

Comments:
The Hestons were horrendous in this static, transatlantic ego trip. Charlton's views on gun control (or lack thereof) don't endear him either, but that's beside the point.
Worst Musical
Nominations:
Casper
Pajama Game
Tess of the D'Urbervilles
Great Balls of Fire
And too many more to mention
Our winner:
Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Comments:
We're tempted to give this as a collective prize to the slew of bad musicals last year, but we'll keep to the rules. And Tess, the adaptation of Hardy's classic, really is a standout. It closed after five weeks with attendance as low as 50 at some performances. Good grief.
Worst Actor
Nominations:
Charlton Heston, Love Letters
David Soul, Comic Potential
Edward Fox, The Chiltern Hundreds
Mark Rylance (as Cleopatra), Antony & Cleopatra
Our winner:
David Soul

Comments:
He hasn't sunk so low as 1998's quease-making revival of The Dead Monkey, but Soul's turn in Comic Potential, especially compared to his outstanding co-star Janie Dee, still leaves way too much to be desired.
Worst Actress
Nominations:
Lydia Heston, Love Letters
Siobhan Moore, Casper
Tara Fitzgerald, Antigone
Mark Rylance (as Cleopatra), Antony & Cleopatra
Our winner:
Tara Fitzgerald
Comments:
A unanimous vote. Fitzgerald should lose the glasses and stick to films.
Worst Opera
Nominations:
Mephistopheles
Our winner:
Mephistopheles
Comments:
According to our opera reviewer, 'the worst production I've ever seen of the worst opera ever written.'

And finally, on a more serious note, we believe the following category really is an Olivier oversight:

Best Play Revival
Nominations:
Look Back in Anger
Real Thing
Merchant of Venice (NT)
Summerfolk
Good
Our winner:
Real Thing

Comments:
There were so many top-notch revivals in 1999, it's a shame they aren't recognised in the Oliviers. And why not? An equivalent category exists for musical revivals. Real Thing wins for many things, not least because it was actually better than the 1982 original.
