Take Ten ... Edinburgh Fringe Shows with Food on the Menu

You won't go hungry at the Edinburgh Fringe, where there's an abundance of shows with food on the 2011 menu. Why not indulge in a few of these irresistible treats? Earwig at an all-female dinner party, watch stand-up comics over a cup of tea and a few biscuits, or help a confused animal decide what to have for his breakfast. Here's our taster of ten to leave you feeling fully satisifed.

1) Dinner with the Dinner Ladies

A civilised female dinner party is not as it seems on the surface in this black comedy, which explores the less than appetising themes of marital discord, murderous intent and prostitution. C soco, 14-20 August, 11:00.

2) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The Roald Dahl classic centres on a poor young boy who's got the winning ticket to tour a magical chocolate factory with its eccentric founder. Here Portobello Community Theatre gives the story a fresh physical theatre approach with some musical sweeteners for the whole family. Zoo, 5-13 August, 12:00.

3) Cigarettes and Chocolate

Keeping the title within the chocolate theme... In this drama, Gemma  however with vastly different content, this play tells the story of Gemma, who decides to give up speaking for Lent in this thought-provoking and engaging drama. TheSpaces on the Mile, 15-20 August, 15:05.

4) Free Tea and Biscuit Hour

Exactly as billed, stand-up comics Paul Savage, Pete Smith and Aaron Twitchen offer you an hour of their finest comedy along with complimentary tea and biscuits. The Voodoo Rooms, 6-27 August, 14:25.

5) James and the Giant Peach

Another adaptation of a Roald Dahl favourite, this interactive performance well a sell out at Edinburgh in 2006, 2007 and 2009 and is now back again. James and his friends are living inside a peach stone in Central Park, New York, where audience members act as tourists viewing the spectacle. Family fun. Paradise in Augustine's, 7-12 August, 9:45.

6) Lapin Wants Breakfast

Join the very hungry rabbit as he ponders what to have for breakfast in this puppet show. There's a slight bilingual tone with some carefully selected French words but all ages should be able to follow along. Scottish Storytelling Centre, 5-23 August, 11:00.

7) Lunch with Quattro Formaggio

This restaurant-based comedy claims to serve ‘an indulgent comedy feast’ as it welcomes audiences to its lunchtime service. The ticket comes complete with helpings of surprise visits from various locals. Underbelly, 4-28 August, 13:20.

8) Pasta! Macaroni’s Puppet Show

In this children's show, four types of pasta are personified, including Macaroni and Spaghetti. Witness four mini adventures as the varying types of carbohydrate battle with life's big dilemmas, such as Spaghetti's undying love for Tomato Sauce. Assembly George Square, 5-21 August, 10:30.

9) Snails and Ketchup

Though the titular combo may not make your stomach grumble, this physical theatre piece will get you in the gut nonetheless. It shows the trauma of a boy from a dysfunctional family going through both menial and brutal everyday happenings. New Town Theatre, 4-28 August, 17:00.

10) The Gherkin Fantasies

This female fast-food vendor comedy double act get themselves in a pickle as they perform their Hull-based sketch show in which they battle for for the title of best Hamburger, with accompanying talk about vegetables. Imans, 5-27 August, 13:00.
