Nick Clegg asks David Cameron to build a snowman in this year’s ”NewsRevue”

Fringe stalwart NewsRevue has been pretty hit and miss over the last few years.

I'm happy to report, then, that the team are back on form. The show's simple conceit – sending up news stories from the past year – is executed to near perfection, with barely a bum note in sight.

It’s all in there, from Rolf Harris to phone hacking, Oscar Pistorius to the badger cull. And there’s plenty of politics, too.

Whilst some of the skits are teetering on the edge of offensiveness, the writers have managed to largely stay on the funny side of the line – particular highlights are the Frozen parody (Nick Clegg asking David Cameron to build a snowman), a nice little Wind in the Willows vignette and the Scottish independence issue portrayed as a divorcing couple.

The cast are cracking – Matt Lee-Steer could actually be Michael McIntyre, if you shut your eyes, and Will Mulvey makes a suitably childish Clegg.

Musical director Michael Riley oversees proceedings, and the rousing Les Mis finale, complete with box step, provides a fine finish to an altogether excellent show.

NewsRevue 2014 runs at the Pleasance Courtyard until 25 August
