Even if you haven't been to one of their live shows, there's a high chance that you have seen Axis of Awesome before. Their song "4 Chords", in which they demonstrate a plethora of songs that can be played using, yes you guessed it, just four chords, has been viewed on YouTube over 60 million times and, as one of them suggests, is probably the reason most people have bought a ticket to see their current show Viva La Vida Loca Las Vegas.
They start by explaining, to anyone who hasn't figured out the obvious, that their show title is made up of three songs; "Viva La Vida" by Coldpay, "Living the Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin and "Viva Las Vegas" by Elvis Presley. They then proceed to do a mashup of these three songs which is slightly clever but not that funny, and the same can be said for other moments in the show including a song about a new superhero called Skeletonman, a Johnny Cash impression and a number about doing the Man dance.
All three performers possess strong stage presence, especially lead singer Jordan Raskopoulos (who I'm sure is the Australian love child of Jack Black and Mark Shenton), and the funniest moments come in their banter between the songs.
Regrettably, "4 Chords" was my favourite part of the night, and I could have just stayed at home and watched that on YouTube.
Axis of Awesome: Viva La Vida Loca Las Vegas runs at the Gilded Balloon until 24 August.
