Take It Interns (Edinburgh Fringe)

It’s not just the witty title that makes this show one of the stand out new musicals at this year’s Fringe.

Its simple yet effective storyline coupled with its clever, witty and humorous songs and an incredible live band make for a thoroughly enjoyable musical comedy from 1945 Productions.

Set in a flashy advertising agency, five young interns are given much more responsibility in their placements than they first imagined. With a job offer at the end of the internship, the youngsters learn to work together in the face of competition under their laid back managers and eccentric Chief Executive.

This new, young, fresh and relevant production is reminiscent of cult musical Avenue Q, with its lewd humour and genuine laugh out loud moments for the youthful audience. And touching on religion in the song “What Would Jesus Do?”, it seems that The Book of Mormon has already inspired some new writing.

The ensemble cast each have their own moments to shine with the staging and direction allowing each character to develop their storylines with ease. The musical numbers are memorable, catchy and well thought-out which allowed the story to progress, rather than just as an excuse for an interlude.

If there is only one new musical you see at Edinburgh this year, make it this one. I cannot wait to see what is next in store for this incredible production. My advice: keep a close eye on Take It Interns.
