Myra DuBois – Service With a Sneer (Edinburgh Fringe)

Wearing more animal print than the cast of The Lion King, Myra Dubois is a sight to behold; with her hair lacquered into a golden hedge, she sashays across the stage in heels and pearls, as visually commanding and arresting as her stage presence, looking like the progeny of Marilyn Monroe and a bottle of Gordon’s gin.

A conversational late-night delight, Myra Dubois’ Service with a Sneer is a fantastically funny evening of song and chat. Taking her audience from the roots of her life on the stage, the story of “Rotherham’s least celebrated daughter” is an absolute joy, a riotously funny and captivating production which is the breathing spirit of late-night cabaret: a boozy, rebellious and hilarious slice of theatre.

Though the budget of the show is small, its spirit is huge. Myra’s control of a room is hypnotic, so endearing that audience members have apparently been known to lay drinks at her feet like tributes to an ancient god. Superlatives fail when describing the warmth, the joy and the happiness of the audience in the tiny little Speakeasy venue of the Voodoo Rooms.
