Thugz n Tearz

Thugz N Tearz is a story of the East London gang scene, filled with drugs and violence. It’s quite crude, but has convincing dialogue and some lovely comic moments.

The performances are generally solid, with the very large cast in the small space in some ways building on the atmosphere of intimidation, but in others feeling a little out of place. The best performances are from Jac Husebo and Adam Bacon who are a very good double act, providing welcome comic relief from the intense plot and dialogue.

The main problem with Thugz N Tearz is that it doesn’t really say anything, and isn’t particularly affecting. It doesn’t leave you with any particular feeling, and the characters are difficult to become engaged with. The performances are top-class, but the writing leaves a lot to be desired.

It’s tightly directed by Ray Ashbourne, who makes inventive use of the space, but it all feels slightly underwhelming. The play is ultimately flawed, not giving any clear message or being dramatic enough to justify the strong performances.
