The Curse of Macbeth

The tragedy of Macbeth is thrust into the realms of horror in this ‘house of mirrors’ rendition of the Scottish Play. In true horror style this well cut version of the text is suffused with shrieking women, zombified witches and a heavy dose of dry ice.

The play is well staged with the two way mirrors performing an important role in revealing character: as Macbeth and his Lady slowly crumble on stage we also see their reflections distort before us. As such, the staging and stage effects play a vital role in creating the play’s atmosphere; however, there are moments when sound or lighting overwhelm the text, and the meaning of lines become sidelined.

If technical issues can be resolved then this play has chance to develop its terrifying potential. All in all The Curse of Macbeth is probably more for those who seek the thrill of a hammer horror than those who love the language of Shakespeare.
