Steve Pretty’s Perfect Mixtape

A very unique set of circumstances involving the catastrophic 2004 boxing day tsunami gave Steve Pretty the rare opportunity of attending his own wake.

His new solo show Steve Pretty’s Perfect Mixtape explores each of the songs in a mixtape created by his best friend for the occasion. He looks at the joy of the mixtape medium and how, in a world of iPods and mp3 players, this ‘artform’ has been lost.

Creating live music from an interesting array of kit ranging from a kettle to a computer motherboard, Pretty is charming and holds the audience in the palm of his hand. A few of the jokes could do with work, but his presence, charisma and musical aptitude ensure an entrenched feelgood factor.

This jumble sale of a show – much like any good mixtape – is an original delight that put a smile on my face for the rest of the day.
