Out of the Blue

Out of the Blue are an all-male a capella group from Oxford. They sprung to greater fame through television’s Britain’s Got Talent this year, but have been Fringe regulars since 2005. This festival they’ve moved from the smaller venues they’ve played in past years to a packed 336-seater Pleasance Beyond.

The show is simply 50 minutes of pure joy. This cheeky group of fifteen lads are funny, quirky and imaginative in their arrangements and perform with incredible energy. Highlights include serenading members of the audience, a vivid portrayal of a Mustang in their take on Mustang Sally, and a very flirty version of Mambo No. 5.

The harmonies are punchy and tight, and the dynamics are controlled without microphones which creates a rich and clean texture to the sound. There aren’t any theatrical tricks or any particularly impressive lighting, but the boys fill the stage with simply themselves and their talent.

The skill of Alexei Kalveks, who is the group’s musical director, is evident throughout; his arrangements are fresh and exciting. Don’t You Want Me Baby is both hysterically funny and pitch perfect. The group seem to appeal to everyone in the audience; these are likeable young men, and this is a bright, cheerful and chirpy show. True, simple entertainment.
