Others

Others is a self-confessed exploration into difference. Three
young women – Jemma McDonnell, Kylie Walsh, Maryam Hamidi – explore
the lives of three ‘other’ woman: an Iranian, an English prisoner, and
a celebrity. Following an exchange of letters over a period of months,
their verbatim piece attempts to understand the lives and motivations
of women who both intrigue and scare them.

Charming incidental music is provided by Shane Durrant, whose use of
keyboard and xylophone lends the script a greater dignity than it
perhaps deserves. Despite best intentions, the verbal collage comes
off as somewhat two-dimensional. Learning about the lives of other
women is an interesting idea, but the script is insufficiently
developed to retain real poignancy. However, there is still enough to
sustain interest throughout the hour: McDonnell, Walsh and Hamidi are
three compelling young actresses, and they create an experimental
piece that is at times moving and engaging.
