Five Reasons to See … The Seven Deadly Sings (Remastered)

Comedian Ashley Frieze returns to the Fringe this year with his show {The Seven Deadly Sings
(Remastered)::15486}
after the show’s success at last year’s festival. In an hour Frieze tries to prove that there
really are only seven songs in the world. Here’s why she thinks you should come and see the show.

Five? Only five? Surely seven would be better? Ok. Five, then.

It’s really very funny – this year’s show is a rework of last year’s outing. It’s everything I liked about last
year’s show plus a bunch of new stuff that I’m even more excited to be doing. My stand-up has always
had loads of jokes about song writing in it, and this show is the perfect excuse to make fun with all the
words and music we love and hate.

It’s rather interesting – I did a lot of research while writing the show. I took ideas from various text
books, read philosophy and mined my own psyche for the things which mattered most to me as a writer
and consumer of music. Our species has been singing since the dawn of time – my show tries to find out
why.

It’s extremely good value – I propose that there are only seven songs in the whole world and then
illustrate them. This means you’re going to experience all sung music in under an hour. That’s a hell of a
claim, and, if true, an extremely efficient use of your time. Oh, and it’s a free show, which is also
excellent for the bank account.

Every show is different – every day we write a new love song, driven by the audience, and we put the
“Seven Deadly Sings” theory to the test, using the audience’s favourite songs. It’s always entertaining to
see which songs people come up with, and how they can be interpreted.

There’s something for everyone – in the show I play three different instruments, sing in a variety of
styles, cover every type of song I can think of, do impressions, make silly jokes, satirise Katie Melua
(always choose an easy target) and pretend to be intellectual for people who like that sort of thing. If
you want to know how to neutralise a rap, where the real Hotel California is, and why Beethoven and
Nietzsche would make bad songwriters, then I have answers.

So that’s five reasons. I didn’t even mention the seven “sings” in my show. What are they? Well you’ll
have to come along to find out.
